It takes a village to raise a child, especially in today’s economy. Simple items like onesies can cost between $12 and $20 a piece, and even shopping secondhand can add up quickly. Now, consider all the other essentials parents need, such as car seats, strollers, cribs, formula, and toys. While family and friends have been able to pass down used items in the past, a parenting network provides the opportunity to share items across the entire Verde Valley. The Community Closet will serve as the processing center for all these shared items. This communal approach helps us reduce, reuse, and recycle. By sharing resources, we can save money and invest in higher-quality items. After their use, these higher-quality items can be donated, helping to sustain the organization.
Several factors contribute to the success of organizations like Goodwill, with one of the most significant being the convenience they offer for both donating and shopping. Our community has the ability and resources to establish a space where volunteers can manage a donation center and storefront for family care items. This center will function similarly to a food bank or thrift store, but it will be specifically designed to assist families in caring for young children. All items provided will be 100% free, regardless of income level.
New and gently used clean baby, kid, and maternity items can be dropped off at the donation center seven days a week. Additionally, a volunteer can pick up items at a scheduled time for your convenience. The center will be open for shopping two days a week, staffed by volunteers. This will allow families to shop for what they need in person and connect with other parents and resource centers in the community.
Part of the mission of The Verde Villages is to change people's perspectives on community and resources while also teaching our children the importance of sharing. When you benefit from someone else’s second-hand item, you may develop a greater sense of responsibility toward your own possessions, ensuring they remain in good condition for future sharing. Our aim is to reduce consumerism and encourage consideration for other families, fostering a spirit of mutual support within our small community.
